THANK
GOD
FOR
TERRIFIC
FATHERS!
A man went to watch his son play little league baseball. Just before the game was to begin, the umpire became ill and the man was pressured to take his place, despite being unqualified for the job.
As it turns out, things did not go well for him that day. His son played poorly, he made several controversial calls, and the fans in the stands were constantly criticizing him.
Finally, it was the last inning. The score was tied and his son came up to bat. Amazingly, the boy got a hit, right down the first baseline. The boy rounded first. He rounded second. He rounded third. He headed for home. In came the ball. The catcher grabbed it and tagged the boy. He was out by a mile. “He’s safe!” the father shouted. The boys team had won.
As you can imagine, the coach of the other team went crazy. He came running out of the dugout and argued the call. “Safe? How could you call him safe? That was a terrible call! You’re a terrible umpire!”
The father stood there speechless. He looked at his son. The son looked at his father. “Uh, he’s right dad,” the son said. “You are a terrible umpire. But you’re a terrific father!”
This month we thank God for the gift of terrific fathers. Fathers who cherish their children; who are involved with their children; who are taking their God-given role in the family seriously. We honor them and celebrate the impact that they have on our lives.
There are two qualities in particular that terrific fathers have.
1. They are there for their children. Their love and presence and involvement gives their children a sense of worth and security and joy.
2. They are concerned about the spiritual welfare of their children. They model in their own lives what it means to follow Jesus. They help introduce their children to the Heavenly Father.
As we celebrate terrific fathers, let us pray that God would give our nation more of them!
